Girl de Hong Kong, 2020

Initially a project to fulfil an adolescent fantasy of growing up as a young woman in Hong Kong, Girl de Hong Kong evolved into a discovery of the commonality between myself and fantasy surrogates found on Instagram. During the process of collecting photos—tracked via geotags of personally significant places in Hong Kong—a shared visual language emerged in both subject and aesthetic. These found photos were paired with kindred pictures taken in Sydney from my own archive, and presented as a unified strip mirroring the endless feeds of social media. The final print hangs like a scroll and enters the viewer’s space, signifying the mobile nature of cultural idiosyncrasies across geographically disparate locations.
